Inspiration
We wanted to push the possibility of Ingress from tower defense/strategic game with more action packed experience, yet encourage players to go outside and exploring the world.
We envisioned an augmented reality battleground that encouraged players to get up and step outside, all while experiencing the high-stakes of defending crucial resources from drone invasions.
What it does
"Drone Attack AR" transports players into an augmented battleground where the skies swarm with enemy drones.
When the game starts, a timer is also starting. The player can navigate through his surroundings in real-time and armed with his laser gun, he has to must defend his precious kinetic capsule full of ressources before it got hacked.
The first to clear the skies secures the ultimate victory. Ready your weapons and step into the AR arena!
How we built it
This WebAR game utilises 8thWall for the AR component, A-Frame/Three.js for 3D rendering, and 8thWall's SharedAR module for multiplayer functionality.
This experience is designed for 2 to 4 players to engage in a battle using their mobile phones. The objective is to find out who has the best laser gun skills to eliminate all the drones attacking your resources.
The first step involved conceptualising the game idea and defining its rules, gameplay mechanics, and in-game elements to create a fun and challenging experience.
From a technical standpoint, we focused on synchronising elements across players and incorporating eye-catching 3D effects to make the game visually appealing.
We designed the game to be user-friendly by implementing a screen flow that provides instructions on gameplay mechanics and how the game operates.
Lastly, to further enhance the player's experience, we added background music and sound effects that correspond to player actions, such as using the laser gun and fighting drones.
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge initially lay in the technical aspects, particularly in synchronising all the multiplayer elements seamlessly. Additionally, we faced the task of striking the right balance between providing sufficient instructions to make the game easily understandable for users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully merging augmented reality with real-time multiplayer functionality to create a cohesive and immersive experience.
Adapting the concept from Ingress into a more action-packed format, thereby expanding the genre's potential.
Achieving a compelling audio-visual synergy through carefully designed 3D effects and soundscapes that enhance gameplay.
What we learned
We learned not only how to build a multiplayer WebAR experience but also how to craft a game that is genuinely enjoyable to play.
What's next for Drone Attack AR
Expanded Arsenal: Introduce new types of weaponry for players, like EMP blasts that temporarily disable enemy drones or shields to block incoming attacks for a limited time.
Diverse Drone Behavior: Add varying types of enemy drones with different attack patterns and abilities, creating a more dynamic combat experience.
Power-Ups and Rewards: Implement a reward system with power-ups and special abilities that can be collected or earned through gameplay.
Geo-Location Based Events Given the game encourages players to go outside, we could implement geo-location-based events or quests that only unlock when you're in specific real-world locations.
