What it does
It is a real time web app which improves the journey experience of the driver and also provides additional safety suggestions. So as I already said, the driver before he starts a particular trip can enter his details -> The address of the place he is heading to(latitude and longitude), his driving experience in term of years(date of issue of license), his age, gender, the time and date of travel, also his speed and acceleration data of the last trip he took on this car(which has to be logged on to his smartphone using any of the available android or IoS apps and transferred to DriveSafe for analysis) So this app uses his data, integrates it with the city of waterloo's open data set to find if on that day at that particular time the route is closed due to some event, or some accident, or if its busy or not. Accordingly it will suggest a different route. In addition to this the app will also crunch the data of his age, experience and try to analyse his driving pattern, skills, tendencies and accordingly give him a risk and aggression score of his drive. This is kind of feedback to the person so that he can drive safely in future. Moreover it can be taken as an input to the insurance use case where his driving scores can judge the premium he will pay (Say less risk or aggression score less premium to pay, more aggression score leads to more premium etc). And his driving patterns will be judged depending on the geographical location, time, date of the place(as weekdays and weekends have different traffic pattern), contours of the road(obtained from opendata set),length of the trails, if off street o on street etc, all of this can be used to compute the above mentioned parameters.
How I built it
I have built this using R , some of the packages from R (shinydashboard, shiny) and the data from the open dataset of city of waterloo
Challenges I ran into
The codes were running on my desktop at office but not on my laptop. hence I couldnt submit any prototype as such today. The packages of R had some compatibility issues it seems and I could not fix them. Really sprry for that. So I just submitted the idea here.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
To have a practical idea which is relevant and might help to mitigate accidents for sure.
What I learned
Coding in limited time (alone, without a team)
What's next for DriveSafe
There is huge scope. It depends upon the use cases and proper implementations.
