Inspiration
Driver fatigue and drowsiness are serious threats to road safety, especially for people who drive long distances or work extended hours. Many drivers fail to recognize early warning signs of fatigue until their ability to react is already compromised.
We created DriverAwaken with a clear mission: make intelligent driver monitoring technology accessible to anyone with an Android smartphone.
Our inspiration came from the opportunity to use artificial intelligence and computer vision to address a real-world safety challenge without requiring expensive specialized hardware.
What it does
DriverAwaken is an AI-powered Android application designed to identify potential signs of driver fatigue and drowsiness using a smartphone camera.
The application offers:
- Facial monitoring: Analyzes facial features and eye-related indicators using computer vision.
- Drowsiness detection: Identifies visual patterns associated with fatigue.
- Intelligent alerts: Warns drivers when the system detects potentially dangerous fatigue indicators.
- Personalized calibration: Adjusts monitoring parameters to improve the user experience.
- Monitoring sessions: Allows users to start, pause, and manage detection sessions.
- Session history: Stores monitoring records for later review.
- Offline functionality: Supports on-device analysis without depending on continuous internet connectivity.
DriverAwaken aims to provide an affordable and practical driver assistance tool that encourages greater awareness of fatigue-related risks.
How we built it
DriverAwaken was developed using Flutter and Dart for Android.
We integrated Google ML Kit to detect facial landmarks and analyze eye-related signals through the smartphone camera.
The system processes these observations using a rule-based risk assessment mechanism to identify possible signs of drowsiness and determine when alerts should be triggered.
We implemented session management, calibration controls, notification mechanisms, and local data storage using Drift and SQLite.
The application is designed around on-device processing to support user privacy and reduce dependence on external services.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was maintaining consistent facial monitoring under different lighting conditions, camera angles, and head movements.
Another challenge was distinguishing natural blinking from patterns that could indicate drowsiness.
We also had to balance detection responsiveness with false-alert reduction, ensuring that notifications would be useful without becoming excessively repetitive.
Optimizing camera processing and mobile application performance was another important part of development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully integrated facial analysis, risk evaluation, monitoring controls, alerts, and session history into a single Android application.
Our main accomplishment was developing a practical prototype that brings computer vision-based fatigue monitoring to everyday smartphones.
We are also proud of prioritizing accessible technology, local processing, and a user-friendly interface.
DriverAwaken demonstrates how software engineering and artificial intelligence can be combined to address meaningful public safety challenges.
What we learned
Developing DriverAwaken strengthened our knowledge of computer vision, real-time facial detection, mobile application development, and risk-based decision systems.
We learned that building an effective monitoring application requires careful consideration of environmental conditions, responsiveness, false positives, and usability.
Most importantly, we learned that applying AI to real-world safety problems requires balancing technological capabilities with reliability and responsible design.
What's next for DriverAwaken
Our next steps include:
- Conducting more extensive testing under diverse real-world conditions.
- Improving detection robustness in challenging lighting environments.
- Refining fatigue evaluation to reduce false alerts.
- Optimizing camera processing and battery consumption.
- Exploring additional fatigue indicators and personalized detection capabilities.
- Expanding compatibility across Android devices.
Our long-term vision is to make DriverAwaken an accessible AI-powered driver safety companion, contributing to safer roads through intelligent and affordable technology.
