Inspiration# 🚗 AI-Powered Driver Drowsiness Detection System
Inspiration
Every year, thousands of road accidents occur because drivers become fatigued or fall asleep while driving. Many of these accidents are preventable with timely warnings. We wanted to develop an intelligent, affordable, and real-time solution that helps drivers stay alert and improves road safety using Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision.
What it does
Our system continuously monitors the driver's face through a webcam and detects signs of drowsiness by analyzing eye closure, blinking patterns, and yawning. When fatigue is detected, the system immediately triggers an audio alarm to wake the driver and help prevent accidents.
How we built it
The application is built using Python and OpenCV for real-time video processing. Facial landmarks are detected using Dlib, allowing the system to calculate the Eye Aspect Ratio (EAR) and identify prolonged eye closure. Additional facial analysis is used to detect yawning. When the predefined thresholds are exceeded, an alert is generated instantly. The application provides real-time monitoring with low latency and high accuracy.
Challenges we ran into
- Detecting faces accurately under different lighting conditions.
- Reducing false alarms caused by blinking or head movement.
- Optimizing the system for real-time performance.
- Improving detection accuracy for users wearing glasses.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional real-time driver monitoring system.
- Achieved accurate drowsiness detection using computer vision.
- Successfully integrated instant audio alerts.
- Designed a lightweight solution that can run on standard computers without specialized hardware.
What we learned
Through this project, we gained practical experience in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision, OpenCV, Dlib, facial landmark detection, real-time video processing, and Python application development. We also learned how to optimize machine learning models for real-time performance.
What's next for AI-Powered Driver Drowsiness Detection
- Deploy the solution on Raspberry Pi and embedded devices.
- Develop a mobile application for wider accessibility.
- Integrate cloud-based monitoring and analytics.
- Add emotion, distraction, and head-pose detection.
- Support integration with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
