Inspiration
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that every year about 100,000 police-reported, drowsy-driving crashes result in nearly 800 fatalities and about 50,000 injuries. People underestimate how important is to drive with a well-rested mind. Based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention being awake for at least 18 hours is the same as someone having a blood content (BAC) of 0.05%. As a result, we believe that it is so crucial to test how your senses and reaction time are before getting into the road. That is why we are highly motivated to build a product that can give you a quick determination to see if you are fit to drive.
What it does
One of the most important qualifications for driving on the road is having the ability of a quick response time. This product will let you take the option of taking a test that checks how your response time and visual sense are. The response time test is a platform that starts out with one dot on the screen and your goal is to check how fast you can click this dot. Every time that you click the dot, it would move to a random place on the screen. The randomness and timer is simulating how quickly you can adjust to changes in the environment. The faster a reaction time, the more fit you are to drive!!! The next test is to see how well your visual senses are. This is an old trusted eye exam where you have to read the small letters and type what letters you see. At the end of these two tests, the product will calculate the results and grade your responses with three levels: fit to drive, take a break, call for an Uber.
How we built it
We used Vue.js to build our web app.
Challenges we ran into
We started building our app with Android Studio because we wanted to learn new techo]nologies but it turned out a big obstacle. We could not share our code in Android Studio that well and somehow GitHub was not responding well with this platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that our visual test ended it up working because we ran into some issues where the text was not submitting. We are proud of learning buefy and vue. Javascript offers a lot of cool features and the style of css is simple to change in code and is simple to understand.
What we learned
Despite running into some obstacles with Andrioid Studio, we still learned a lot of the features in this platform. The editing still is really fun to customize because you can either use a split screen where you can me the style changes of the app in the form of code or we can just drag stuff into it with design tab. Buefy offers excellent documentantion to help us guide with the right props and methods to write for each component.
What's next for Drive Safer
The next step for Driver Safer is to implement more tests and games that can also provide indications that you are in perfect conditions to drive.
