In light of Michigan's recent prohibition on smartphone use by drivers, it's crucial to address the underlying issue of distractions behind the wheel. Last year, Michigan witnessed 1,120 traffic fatalities, with a significant number attributed to smartphone distractions. While modern vehicles are now equipped with advanced infotainment systems, such as Android Auto and heads-up displays, studies indicate that these can be equally distracting. Voice control, though a potential solution, often lacks the precision required for intricate tasks, such as adjusting a navigation map's specific location.
This project proposes an innovative approach: leveraging smartwatches as an interface for Android Auto. This aims to provide drivers with a more refined and less distracting interaction with their car's infotainment system. The main tasks include: 1) gesture recognition on smartwatches; 2) use the gestures to control Android Auto; 3) develop a demonstration application; 4) integrate gesture control with voice control (optional).
