Drive Buddy Poster
Inspiration
We were inspired by the growing population here in Charlotte not only as students and commuters but also as women. We felt that it was important to address the problems associated with the natural increase of drivers. Although Charlotte has plans to increase the level of infrastructure for the roadways and highways, we felt like this is something that we can do as a people to help increase safety and cut down on carbon emissions. Drive Buddy seeks to merge the gaps between the city's infrastructure and the diverse background of users and their driving behavior.
What it does
Drive Buddy is a personalized mobile app that works in tandem with GPS navigation systems to track the users' driving habits and subsequently provide a score based on their driving behavior. Then if needed provides tips and feedback on things the user can do differently to improve their score, including customizing routes to the users' preferences. Some personalization's include providing different options for routes based on protected left turn lanes or recommending routes based on preferences for low speeds.
How we built it
We built this project through a process which started with research and used different databases based on traffic congestion and collisions in North Carolina. From here we sought to merge the gaps between the city and its people by creating an algorithm that can measure poor driving habits. This system uses GPS navigation to track user behavior and provide feedback based on layout of the city.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into while creating this project were understanding how the app can best help users with low scores while cutting down on congestion. Because each driver is unique, we needed to further consider the type of person who could most benefit from our app. We wanted each person to feel more confident while also making them aware of smarter driving decisions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One thing we're really proud of was the process of creating the visuals but also how well we were able to come together as a team to come up with creative solutions and overcome hurdles. We are proud to be able to come up with an innovative solution in such a short period of time.
What we learned
We learned how increased car congestion is going to be a growing problem in this city if not addressed with the perspective that not everyone has the same level of access to public transport. We also learned there are small, but effective easy changes commuters can do to help the city in its efforts.
What's next for Drive Buddy
Seeing how these results can enhance this city's effort to make a positive change and expanding our app to other major cities.
