What it does
We created a website that will allow students and faculty to find the location of drinking fountains and rate them. Hydration Buddy aims to address the plastic waste created by buying single-use plastic water bottles by encouraging students and faculty to buy reusable water bottles that can be refilled from quality sources: our local drinking fountains.
How we built it
We began with a team brainstorming discussion and considered creating a game to raise awareness of lesser-known endangered species. Next, we decided which languages and frameworks to use while creating a UI mockup using Canva. Our website was built with HTML, CSS, and TypeScript in conjunction with Firebase in order to store the reviews and users.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was connecting the database to the web server. Additionally, none of the team members previously knew TypeScript and some members had to learn it the Friday afternoon before the hackathon. We had many alignment issues towards the evening when merging branches between our individual computers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team worked extremely well together, with each team member contributing uniquely to the project.
What we learned
We learned a lot about the different stages of completing a hackathon project: planning, coding, and pitching. During our free time, we frequently practiced German on Duolingo.
