Inspiration

I built DriftOS because I was constantly distracted by screens and overwhelmed by content while trying to relax, study, or sleep. I wanted a minimal and peaceful digital space — something that removes stimulation instead of adding more. ASMR sounds are known to help with stress relief and sleep, but most platforms are cluttered and not optimized for truly passive, relaxing experiences. DriftOS was created to solve that.

What it does

DriftOS is a minimalist ASMR web experience designed to help users focus, study, or fall asleep. It allows users to:

  • Select or upload a relaxing background image
  • Choose ambient ASMR audio (e.g. rain, fireplace, forest, etc.)
  • Set a playback timer for focus sessions or naps
  • Enter “black screen mode” to reduce light stimulation
  • Watch a subtle countdown in the center if desired

The entire interface is distraction-free and designed to help people drift into a relaxed state — like their own operating system for peace.

How we built it

  • Frontend: HTML, Tailwind CSS, JavaScript
  • Audio Engine: Howler.js for smooth, multi-sound ASMR playback
  • Timer Logic: Vanilla JS with custom countdown and sleep mode behavior
  • Dark/Light Mode Toggle
  • Image Management: Users can choose from presets or upload their own background
  • Deployed as a single-page web app, fully responsive and optimized for desktop/mobile

Challenges we ran into

  • Fine-tuning audio overlap and playback logic for seamless transitions
  • Ensuring black screen mode functions on all devices and browsers
  • Keeping the interface minimal while still giving users enough control
  • Building a reliable countdown system that doesn’t interfere with audio or screen mode

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • A fully functional MVP with a clean, peaceful interface
  • Supporting multiple ambient sounds with smooth looping
  • Creating a visually minimal yet emotionally rich experience
  • Making something we personally use to wind down or stay focused

What we learned

  • Importance of simplicity in UI/UX for wellness-related tools
  • How sound and visuals can shape mood and productivity
  • Building calming experiences is just as important as building fast ones

What's next for DriftOS – ASMR for Focus, Study & Sleep

  • Add user accounts to save preferences and sound combos
  • Introduce more sound packs and background themes
  • Allow AI-generated custom ambient mixes
  • Let users upload their own background sounds to personalize the experience
  • Mobile app version with offline support
  • Analytics to help users understand their relaxation/focus habits
  • Collaborate with ASMR creators for exclusive content

DriftOS is just getting started — we’re excited to help more people find calm in a noisy digital world.
