Inspiration
Dreamwood Isle was inspired by the need for a quiet, grounding space inside Horizon Worlds. As a full-time caregiver and solo creator, my real life can be overwhelming and overstimulating. I wanted to build a peaceful island where players could slow down, breathe, and decompress. The project takes cues from meditation and sleep apps, reimagining their calming techniques inside an interactive 3D world. From the beginning, Dreamwood Isle was designed as a wellness tool, not a traditional game.
What it does
Dreamwood Isle is a landscape-first mobile relaxation experience. Players explore a tranquil forest island, check in with their mood, unlock calming soundscapes, and interact with Willow ... a warm, grandmotherly NPC who offers gentle grounding dialogue and guided meditations. Willow is notified of your mood when you check in and tracks how many times you've visited.
Willow currently speaks when players enter the world and during select interactions. Her behavior is intentionally simple in this version, and future updates will refine how she responds to proximity and where she directs her attention.
Players earn calmness gems through two progression systems:
- Mood Check-In Rewards: Sharing how they feel grants a small gem reward.
- Passive Calm Rewards: Players earn gems naturally by spending quiet time on the island.
These gems unlock ASMR soundscapes and relaxation tools that deepen the experience. Dreamwood Isle focuses on stillness and emotional grounding rather than action or competition.
How we built it
Dreamwood Isle was developed entirely as a solo project. Major systems include:
- a persistent gem economy tied to mood check-ins and passive time
- a passive reward timer that grants gems as players remain on the island
- a custom ASMR soundboard with player-specific looping audio
- NPC dialogue pacing and selectable meditation prompts
- mobile-optimized UI designed for landscape mode
- environment design centered around low cognitive load and visual calm
Much of the development involved rebuilding systems such as PPV handling, audio triggers, and state synchronization to ensure stable behavior across mobile and VR.
Challenges we ran into
Building a wellness-focused world introduced unique challenges. Willow’s dialogue currently triggers from a distance and at world entry, and adjusting her proximity logic, timing, and player-facing behavior has been complex. Creating reliable player-specific audio looping also required custom scripting and multiple iterations.
Balancing atmosphere, accessibility, and mobile performance while maintaining a calming experience required frequent refinement and structural changes to core systems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully adapted the structure of mobile meditation and sleep apps into an interactive Horizon environment. The passive gem system rewards calm instead of intensity. The ASMR soundboard provides immersive sensory environments. Willow offers a warm emotional anchor, even as her behavior continues to evolve. Dreamwood Isle stands out as a world intentionally built as a wellness tool rather than a traditional game.
What we learned
This project required deep learning in PPV systems, audio logic, NPC behavior, and mobile-first UX. I learned how to rebuild systems cleanly, structure larger scripts, and prioritize emotional design and user comfort. It reinforced the importance of designing experiences that support calm and care rather than speed or complexity.
What's next for Dreamwood Isle
- refining Willow’s proximity behavior and player-facing interactions
- adjusting her audio range to prevent distant triggering at spawn
- expanding guided meditations and grounding conversations
- adding new ASMR soundscapes and unlockable environments
- enhancing the UI for clarity and ease of use
- creating additional serene areas such as glow groves or lantern sanctuaries
Dreamwood Isle will continue evolving into a fully immersive wellness and relaxation sanctuary for mobile and VR players.
