Inspiration

Technology often leaves elders behind. Adults 55+ have incredible stories, wisdom, and creativity worth sharing—but modern platforms intimidate rather than invite. DreamForge was born from the belief that creativity and learning have no age limit. We built a tool that empowers elders to bring their ideas to life with patience, clarity, and respect.

What it does

DreamForge is an AI-powered creation platform designed specifically for adults ages 55+. It helps users bring their ideas to life—whether preserving family stories, learning new skills, expressing creativity, or organizing community resources. Key Features: Elder-Centered Onboarding: Simple two-step goal and interest selection AI Coach: Patient AI assistant that explains with analogies, avoids jargon, and celebrates progress Guided Templates: Step-by-step wizards for family archives, tech explainers, blogs, and community guides Accessible Design: High contrast, large text, dark mode, adjustable sizes—beautiful, not patronizing

How we built it

Frontend: React + Vite + Tailwind CSS Backend: Node.js + Express AI: Google Gemini API with custom elder-friendly system prompts Persistence: LocalStorage for goals and drafts We separated core-app (building logic) from user-experience (UI) for clarity. Our AI uses dynamic prompts incorporating user goals, making every interaction personalized and encouraging.

Challenges we ran into

API Integration: Gemini authentication and model compatibility issues led us to implement smart demo responses Tone Balance: Avoiding condescension while maintaining extreme clarity required extensive prompt iteration Time Pressure: Prioritized one perfect user journey over many half-finished features

What we learned

Technical: AI prompt engineering shapes personality, not just content; fallback strategies are essential; accessibility is easier built-in than retrofitted Design: Empathy-driven design asks "Would my grandmother find this welcoming?"; high contrast can be beautiful; every word matters Teamwork: Clear roles accelerate development; frequent check-ins prevent disasters; shared vision keeps teams aligned
