Inspiration
Obstructive sleep apnea affects about 1 in 5 adults and comes with a ~300% higher cardiovascular risk. CPAP machines that aid this issue are not regularly used, mostly because they're uncomfortable, bulky, or annoying enough to cause overall loss of sleep. This is the problem we decided to fix.
What it does
DreamBreathe is a more compact, lighter, smarter CPAP that tracks health metrics, flags maintenance issues before they become problems, and can notify loved ones if any vitals tracked have worrisome signs.
How we built it
We combined micro-CPAP design concepts with CAD modeling and layered in sensor-driven features. Then we built an app to provide daily updates on the information gained from the sensors.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest struggle was within the purpose of our app, and how in depth the daily statistics should be and what information is the most important. We also struggled balancing practicality with comfort.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We produced both a working prototype design (CAD) and a functional companion site.
What we learned
Medical treatments must be both effective and practical, or they won't be use. Accessibility, comfort, and timing are all equally important.
What's next for DreamBreathe
We plan to refine the prototype, improve customization options for different user needs, and on the overall, achieve more comfortable sleep options with this type of device.
