Inspiration
I was looking through all the briefs from the different influencers and what stood out to me with Gabby Beckords brief was that if was genuinely trying to help her audience to do something that they deep down want to do, but don't always have time for or have other excuses to avoid their dreams. Her story inspired me to figure out a way to help women looking to travel to actually take the leap of faith and travel the world.
What it does
I built Dream Travel Planner, which helps break down the giant hurdle of preparations, planning and all the things you need to go from that first spark of interest to actually sitting on a plane and flying to your dream destination. It is important to not lose that spark and the dream of getting to your destination so I've also added daily "quests" or nudges, that keeps you dedicated to making reality of the journey.
During the time you do daily quests and slowly work toward taking the leap and buying a ticket, there will be important things you will need such as figuring out what to take with you on the trip, that's why everything you do in the app will be added to a journal. You can write daily thoughts, add pictures on locations you want to visit, write a checklist on what you need to bring and much more. Any time you need the checklist, it will be right there in your journal.
How we built it
The first version is built for iphone users so I have made a native app in swift together with swiftUI. First I like to plan the app using Grok or ChatGPT, when we have a solid plan I move on to design the app in Figma. I really like designing stuff so I usually do this part myself, it's of course an iterative process, what you see in the app is not the same as the first design I made in Figma. I guess this is what makes it fun.
Lastly when we have 80% of the design, at least a solid theme and most of the structure is complete we move over to claude code and build the app together.
Payments are of course made together with RevenueCat!
Challenges we ran into
The most time consuming parts are usually design, but when I built the app there's always something that ends up looking a bit meh so I usually need to go back to the drawing board and then back again. That happens a few times.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
There's an actual app! That fits the brief!
I was so nervous at first because the briefs felt like they wanted these huge apps that do everything, but when you scope it down and maybe don't do everything they ask for, that's when you find a solid product that does maybe one or two things and does them well.
All the nudges and quests are actually created by the local AI which is AMAZING and saves us a lot of costs. This made it possible for us to just make the entire app a local app without any cloud integrations.
What we learned
If I would do this again I would first let an AI actually build the app first and see how it would look, just to get inspiration and maybe sprout some ideas that gets me started quickly.
What's next for Dream Travel Planner
As soon as we're approved on the AppStore we will launch it!
