Inspiration

Our project was inspired by digital museum experiences such as The Museum of the World, which presents historical artifacts through an interactive, spatial interface, allowing users to explore time and culture in a non-linear way. We were also influenced by platforms like Historypin, which demonstrate how personal and cultural stories can be preserved digitally over time.

From analysing these platforms, we noticed that what makes them effective is not just the information they store, but how users explore it through interaction, visual storytelling, and a sense of discovery.

However, we realised that while these platforms preserve physical history and shared cultural memory, there is almost no space dedicated to preserving something deeply human yet intangible: dreams.

This led to our core idea -- what if dreams could be treated as cultural artifacts?

What it does

Dream Archive is a platform that allows users to store, explore, and revisit dreams in an immersive way. Instead of functioning as a traditional diary, it acts as a living archive, where dreams are: • Preserved as personal experiences • Connected to cultural interpretations (spiritual, emotional, psychological) • Organised in a way that allows users to explore patterns, meanings, and memories over time By placing dreams within a broader cultural context, the platform transforms them from fleeting thoughts into meaningful, interpretable data.

How we built it

We built Dream Archive as a front-end interactive prototype using: • HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for structure, interactivity, and 3D spatial navigation • Gesture-based hand tracking implemented directly in the browser for immersive interaction • AI tools including Gemini to assist with ideation, cultural research, and rapid prototyping • 3D/interactive design elements to simulate an immersive experience Our focus was on designing a user experience that feels exploratory, similar to navigating a digital exhibition rather than scrolling through a static app.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was translating an abstract concept (dreams) into a structured digital experience. We faced: • Implementing browser-based hand tracking with no prior experience, under time pressure • Technical bugs when implementing interactive and visual features • Difficulty balancing design vs functionality within limited time • Challenges in making the interface feel intuitive while still being unique

Additionally, working with new tools and integrating different components under time pressure required constant problem-solving.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are especially proud that we were able to: • Turn a highly abstract idea into a working interactive prototype • Successfully implement gesture and hand-tracking interaction, enhancing immersion • Create a concept that meaningfully combines technology, storytelling, and cultural preservation

Most importantly, we took the project from idea to completion within a limited timeframe.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned: • How important user experience design is in making ideas meaningful • The challenges of building interactive systems under time constraints • The value of teamwork, communication, and adaptability

We also gained experience using new tools and thinking beyond traditional app design, focusing on experience rather than just functionality. Also, we learnt how quickly ambitious ideas run into real constraints, and how important it is to protect your core vision while making hard trade-offs under pressure.

What's next for Dream-Archive

Moving forward, we want to expand Dream Archive into a fully realised platform by: • Enhancing the 3D immersive environment with persistent, user-owned constellations • Adding deeper AI-powered dream interpretation drawing from cultural and psychological frameworks • Allowing users to discover shared dream patterns across different cultures showcasing what humanity dreams about collectively • Improving mobile performance and usability for a seamless cross-device experience

Our long-term vision is a platform where dreams are not just stored — but understood, shared, and preserved as part of human culture. Dreams are the one thing every human has in common. Dream Archive is where they live.
