Inspiration
The idea of Draw Impostor started during a night with friends.
We were playing an impostor game and at one moment we thought: what if we had to draw the word instead of explaining it?
None of us are really good at drawing, so we knew it could become very funny very fast.
When I started seeing Game Jams and hackathons, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to finally try to create something cool by myself instead of just having ideas and never building them.
So I took this small idea from a night with friends and decided to make it into a real game.
How it works
The concept is simple.
Most players receive the same word, but one player, the impostor, receives a similar but different word.
Everyone has to draw their word without saying what it is.
After that, all drawings are shown to the players and everybody has to guess who received the wrong word.
Then comes the vote.
Sometimes the impostor is obvious.
Sometimes the worst drawer looks like the impostor.
And sometimes nobody understands anything.
That's part of the fun.
How we built it
The game was built as a multiplayer web game with a lobby system.
We had to create the different game phases: joining a lobby, receiving a word, drawing, waiting for everybody to finish, showing the drawings and finally voting.
The goal was to keep everything simple and easy to understand so you can join a game and start playing quickly.
What I learned
This project taught me a lot about multiplayer logic, real-time communication, game states, lobbies and synchronization between players.
I also learned something simple: you don't always need a huge idea to make something fun.
Sometimes a small idea with friends is enough.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was multiplayer synchronization.
If one player finishes drawing before the others, everyone still needs to stay in the correct game state.
Managing all the transitions between drawing, reveal and voting was probably the most difficult part.
But this is also why I wanted to participate in a Game Jam: to challenge myself, learn new things and actually finish a project.
At the end, Draw Impostor is just a simple idea made to have fun with friends, laugh at terrible drawings and accuse the wrong person.
