Project Summary

A web application that connects people who speak different languages.

Our Story

During the early planning stages of this project, we wanted to look toward the "Login with Love" theme. We tossed around ideas like automating Tinder, matchmaking for pet adoption (and child adoption), and eventually matchmaking between characters of a book based on a scrape of the text.

From there our ideas took a turn back towards connecting people, thinking about the Community category. We saw a possibility in connecting people who are bilingual with people who want to learn a new language.

Finally, we brought together these 2 ideas into the Language Learning Lounge. A platform which scrapes media (we used song lyrics in our demo) for easy vocabulary, and connect people in chat who are trying to learn/teach a language.

Building It

Our team mostly had experience with Web Dev so that was always our target platform. We ended up settling on Flask as our framework (which unfortunately rendered us unable to try out Blockstack). We used a sqlite database on the back end to store user data, and used Bootstrap to style the front end.
