What it does
-Dragon Egg is a fantasy-themed multiplayer word game that makes improving vocabulary and spelling fun and competitive. Players join a lobby of up to four people and compete in a fast-paced word challenge where they must think quickly and avoid getting caught with the dragon egg when time runs out. Our goal was to turn something as simple as practicing words into an entertaining experience that people can enjoy with their friends.
How we built it
-We built Dragon Egg using React and Vite for the frontend and Node.js for the backend. We implemented WebSockets to enable real-time communication between players, allowing the game to update instantly as players interact with each other. We also designed a fantasy-themed interface with pixel-art characters, animations, and interactive game elements. Throughout development, we used Git and GitHub to collaborate, manage separate branches, and combine our work. We also explored different database options to support player information and game functionality.
Challenges we ran into
-One of our biggest challenges was working with Git and GitHub, particularly when merging different branches and resolving conflicts between our changes. Since we were working on different parts of the project simultaneously, keeping everything updated and functioning together took longer than expected. Another challenge was deciding which database would work best for our game. Researching different options and figuring out how to implement them took up a significant amount of our limited development time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Our biggest accomplishment was being able to learn and work with new technologies in such a short amount of time. We started with an idea that we had only envisioned and managed to turn it into something playable. Being able to combine our individual contributions into one functioning multiplayer game was especially rewarding. We're proud of how much we accomplished together despite the time constraints.
What's next for Dragon Egg
-Our next goal is to expand Dragon Egg beyond its current four-player lobby limit, allowing larger groups of friends to play together. We also want to turn Dragon Egg into a platform that supports multiple game modes rather than just one. Each game mode would share the same core purpose of helping players improve their diction, vocabulary, and spelling while keeping the experience fun, competitive, and engaging. Ultimately, we want Dragon Egg to become a place where people can learn and improve their language skills without feeling like they're studying.
