Inspiration

Doctors and patients are under immense pressure in today's healthcare environment. Physicians are often forced to spend less than 15 minutes per patient, making every minute critical. Meanwhile, patients often lack the medical vocabulary to articulate their symptoms effectively, frequently omitting crucial information, whether out of anxiety or simply because they lack the knowledge about what is relevant. This leads to a systemic communication gap where patients leave their appointments feeling confused and overwhelmed about their own treatment plans. We wanted to build something that solves this and empowers patients to take control of their health.

What it does

Dr. Speak serves as a personal AI health advocate that bridges this doctor-patient communication gap across every stage of the healthcare journey:

  • Pre-Visit: Patients interact with an empathetic AI voice agent that asks targeted questions to draw out their symptoms. It then translates this natural language into a concise, medically structured summary so the doctor can immediately focus on diagnosis.

  • During the Visit: The app securely records the appointment and generates an easy-to-read, structured summary of the diagnosis and treatment plan, ensuring no detail or instruction is missed.

  • Post-Visit: The AI agent remains available 24/7 to answer follow-up questions based on the visit's transcript, eliminating confusion and reinforcing treatment adherence.

How we built it

The app is built for the iPhone using the Swift programming language. The AI voice agents are powered by xAI's grok APIs.

What's next for Dr. Speak

Dr. Speak has the potential to serve as the ultimate data source for training AI doctors. By comparing the questions our voice agent asked with those the doctor asked, and then assessing patient understanding after the visit, we have a unique ability to train an AI to not only match but exceed the ability to human doctors to diagnose patients and communicate treatment plans to them in a way they can understand and adhere to.
