Dr.Pippin Flask , Medical Chat Bot - Team Pippin Flask

Inspiration

We decided to make a chatbot that suggests possible health problems for underlying symptoms/condition a person is experiencing. We wanted a site that would eliminate unnecessary visits to clinics or give proper advice when a doctor's opinion is needed. Additionally, our pippin flask bot narrows down the possible health problems of an individual, which saves time when it comes to diagnosis.

What it does

An individual is prompted to enter their name, age, and gender. These will all be taken into factor by the chatbot and considered when making a possible diagnosis. The user is then prompted to enter their symptoms and the challenges they are facing. The chatbot analyzes key words and matches it onto another list that contains the symptoms. If there are similarities to the pre-programmed symptoms and the user input, this is analyzed and the possible diseases associated with the symptoms are sent for output.

How we built it

Front-end:

We opened a .py file in flask and used render_template() to return html files. This allowed us to make pages for our website.
We linked out html pages to each other.
Tried connecting front-end to back-end using pyscript, flask, javascript, etc. but could not figure it out. :(

Back-end:

User interacts with bot. User is prompted to inpiut name, age, gender.
Name, age, gender are parameters considered when diagnosing the individual
User is prompted to enter symptoms/challenges experienced
Bot takes in key words from user's input.
Code runs through each word in user input and puts it into list. List is compared to another list in the code containing symptoms. If symptoms match, a secondary list is used which contains all the symptoms and the diseases that match them. The possible diseases are then printed as output.

Challenges we ran into

We did not know how to use javascript or other front-end languages, so we only used python. This made it very hard to connect/link our front end and back end program
We could not install pip or flask
We had to use flask to make a website using python, this cause challenges as we could not directly code for the front-end and neither could we directly code on flask for the back end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Three of our team members were able to make a chatbot on python using classes, dictionaries, and modules.
Three of our team members learned machine learning through self-teaching.
Two of our team members learned how to use and code flask and html.
We communicated really well as a team and considered each other's opinions very well.

What we learned

We have to plan early when it comes to connecting the front end and back end programs. This should not be the last step, but rather one of the firsts.
Python is not an easy language to use when making websites, other languages must be considered unless python is necessary.
