The Problem
The people capable of building something meaningful often don't struggle because they lack ambition or ability. They struggle because the right people, projects, knowledge, and opportunities are fragmented across disconnected platforms.
Our research with 19 respondents showed this clearly:
- 68.4% said finding people with specific interests or complementary skills was somewhat or very difficult.
- 36.8% identified an unclear roadmap or lack of a concrete plan as their primary barrier to progress.
- 73.7% currently find collaborators by asking friends or classmates directly.
- 47.4% use social media such as LinkedIn or Discord to find collaborators.
- 31.6% either do not formally track progress or rely on fragmented tools.
- 26.3% said they have no system for maintaining motivation or accountability.
The problem isn't simply "people need another social network."
It is that the people, capabilities, projects and problems surrounding a person's purpose are not connected in a meaningful way.
Our Idea
Purposera is a purpose-driven network built around what a person is trying to accomplish.
Instead of starting with "Who do you know?", Purposera starts with:
What are you trying to build?
The system then maps the surrounding ecosystem of people, projects, domains, capabilities and open problems.
The goal is to make previously invisible connections visible.
A person working on a problem in machine learning might discover someone working on the same mission through computational biology, robotics, mathematics, or another complementary field.
The important connection is not simply that two people have similar interests.
It is that their capabilities and current work can combine into something neither could easily build alone.
The Core Interaction
Purposera's core experience follows three stages:
1. Discover
A user's mission becomes a living network of related people, projects, domains and open problems.
2. Understand
Instead of simply viewing someone's profile, the user can see why they are connected: their shared mission, complementary capabilities, current work and potential collaboration.
3. Form a Mission
Purposera turns that connection into a concrete collaborative mission by showing what each person brings and what the mission needs.
For example:
You bring: Machine Learning, Python, AI Systems
Alex brings: Computational Biology, Biology, Research
Mission needs: Biological Data, Validation, Open Research
This turns a weak social connection into a potential building relationship.
Why We Built It
We believe that some of the world's most valuable work happens when people with unusual levels of curiosity, ability and commitment find each other.
But those people are often separated by geography, institutions, disciplines and existing social networks.
The internet has made information abundant. It has not made the right human connections equally discoverable.
Purposera is an attempt to build that missing layer.
Research
Our research directly influenced the product.
Respondents repeatedly described problems including:
- difficulty finding the right people to work with
- lack of structure and clear roadmaps
- niche interests being difficult to find communities for
- people hesitating to share their interests
- lack of guidance and accountability
- fragmented approaches to tracking progress
This led us away from building another generic community platform and toward a system organized around missions and relationships between people and work.
What We Built
We designed a high-fidelity product concept in Figma demonstrating the core experience:
Mission → Network → Connection → Collaboration → Mission
The prototype focuses on the central interaction rather than trying to build an entire social platform.
The network visualization represents the product's central idea: a person's work exists within a much larger ecosystem of people, projects, capabilities and problems.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was defining what the product should actually connect.
We initially considered building another platform for communities and opportunities. Research showed that this would reproduce the fragmentation we were trying to solve.
The breakthrough was treating the user's mission as the organizing structure.
Instead of connecting people because they belong to the same community, Purposera connects people because their work can contribute to the same outcome.
Future Vision
The prototype represents the beginning of a larger system.
We envision Purposera becoming a living map of human work: continuously connecting people, projects, knowledge and unsolved problems as they evolve.
The long-term goal is not to help people spend more time networking.
It is to help the right people find each other quickly enough to build things that otherwise might never exist.
