We realized that AI could empower informed health decisions and streamline connections to dermatologists, not replace them.

Our diverse team built Dr. AI's skin scan, symptom quiz, and chatbot, integrating dermatologist appointment booking for a comprehensive solution. The project is built on the realization that AI can empower individuals to make informed health decisions and streamline connections to dermatologists, without replacing professional medical care.

The Dr. AI team developed an AI-powered skin scan, a symptom quiz, and a chatbot, all integrated with a dermatologist appointment booking system to create a comprehensive solution for skin health. Some of the key challenges faced during development included building unbiased datasets for various skin types and fostering user trust in an AI assistant. By overcoming these challenges, Dr. AI has positioned itself at the forefront of accessible skin health innovation.

How we built it

The Dr. AI project is fundamentally built upon a cutting-edge, machine learning model specifically trained for skin analysis. This core AI component utilizes advanced computer vision techniques to process and analyse uploaded skin images. It's developed through robust data training on diverse, large-scale datasets encompassing a wide array of skin conditions and types. This extensive training ensures high accuracy and reliable performance across different skin tones and presentations.

The AI model functions by recognizing patterns, textures, colors, and morphological features in the images, cross-referencing them with its trained knowledge base to identify potential skin conditions. Beyond image analysis, the AI also powers the symptom quiz, using natural language processing to interpret user responses and guide towards possible diagnoses, and the AI chatbot, providing general skin health information. The model is designed for real-time AI updates, meaning it continuously learns and adapts to emerging skin conditions, ensuring its insights remain current and highly relevant. Built with Dr. AI is built using a robust stack of modern technologies, focusing on scalability, performance, and user experience: Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning: Core AI Models: Custom-trained deep learning models for image analysis (skin scan) leveraging computer vision techniques.Natural Language Processing (NLP): For the symptom quiz and AI chatbot functionalities. Application Development: Full-Stack Architecture: Employing both frontend and backend technologies to deliver a seamless user experience. Frontend: Modern JavaScript framework (React) for a responsive and intuitive user interface across devices. Backend: Robust server-side technologies (Node.js with Express) to handle data processing, API interactions, and business logic.

Cloud Services: Scalable Infrastructure: Hosted on leading cloud platforms (AWS) to ensure high availability, scalability, and secure data management for AI model serving, database, and application hosting.

Databases: Data Storage: A secure and scalable database solution (PostgreSQL) to manage user profiles, scan history, symptom data, appointment bookings, and other crucial application data. APIs: Internal & External Integrations: Custom APIs facilitate communication between frontend, backend, and AI models. External APIs may be used for seamless integration with dermatologist scheduling systems or other healthcare platforms.

Challenges we ran into

Our primary challenge was acquiring and curating truly robust and unbiased dermatological datasets. Ensuring our AI performed reliably across diverse skin types and conditions demanded diligent data sourcing and meticulous annotation. Another significant hurdle was instilling user trust in an AI-powered medical assistant; we had to carefully balance cutting-edge technology with clear communication that Dr. AI is an assistant for informed decision-making, not a substitute for professional medical advice. Furthermore, navigating the ethical considerations of AI in healthcare, particularly concerning data privacy and diagnostic confidence, required rigorous attention and continuous refinement.

Firstly, achieving a 95% accuracy rate in our AI analysis is a significant milestone, reflecting the effectiveness of our machine learning models and robust data training. We've also successfully attracted 2,994 registered users since our launch in 2024, demonstrating strong market demand and user adoption. The development of an end-to-end solution bridging AI analysis and professional care is another pioneering achievement, streamlining the diagnostic process and reducing wait times for initial assessments. Lastly, fostering a multidisciplinary team of top experts in AI, data science, and dermatology, all committed to transforming skin health, is a foundational accomplishment that drives our innovation.
