Inspiration
We really wanted to help local communities, so we developed a web application that will be used as a platform for volunteering events. What better way to help your local community than to donate your time helping out?
What it does
It finds local volunteers and connects them with volunteer organizers. Furthermore, sponsors can donate items, which volunteers can use credit hours to purchase.
How we built it
We first came up with a plan for the idea. This was more of a SLDC start to a project as we mapped out in theory our database and how the project would flow. Then, we started to build a very rough draft of the project so that we could link the back end up. After that, we started to add in all of the UI and style while the back end part of the team did their work. At the end, we ended up coding until the last minuet. For front end, we used HTML, CSS, JS, back end was Python/flask, and SQL.
Challenges we ran into
We had a ton of challenges with the database at the start. We were kind of lucky that there was a sponsor outside that helped us understand how our database should work (thank you ELFEN!). At around 8am, our code broke and github was not working, so we had to remake the repo and deal with that.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of finishing and submitting the project. We had a lot of challenges and no one gave up. We coded until the last second and got it done!
What we learned
We learned a ton of CSS and SQL. Python and flask was a real challenge as well, especially since we all had to learn pycharm once the back end was linked so that everything could render correctly.
What's next for Downtime
We need to finish the JS for the project. We are still coding until the last minuet, but we are very proud of this project. We think that the project can truly help local communities, so we will continue to develop it and offer it for free.
