Inspiration
I read "downloaf" somewhere on the interwebs, so I wanted to make a file sharing service called "downloaf" because it is funny. Here it is.
How it works
You "uploaf" a file, and send the link to your friend, somehow. The receiver can then download that file.
Challenges I ran into
I tried to make download progress similar to how I made upload progress. This is apparently superiorly hard.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It appears to work nicely, and it is a funny name. It is also fairly safe from a user perspective because the file data and file names are stored separately, and only assembled when the end user downloads the file. However it does not use SSL right now because I already have one SSL endpoint on the same server, which makes it impossible to have one for this domain as well.
What I learned
I became better at sinatra as well as nginx. I also messed about with cloudflare and learned the hard what that cdn's have limits to how large files can be passed through their network.
What's next for Downloaf.me
I would like to have drag-n-drop of files, but I don't have the time right now to figure that out. If you know how to do that, contact me and I will put it in :) I also feel the design could do with some improvement, but it feels alright now.
