Inspiration
Despite advancements in game graphics, as kids who grew up during the early 2010s, we wanted to relive the nostalgia of playing 2d platformers - so we decided to develop a platformer that does exactly that.
What it does
Inspired by Doodle Jump, the objective of the game is to descend through platforms by either moving left or right, but be careful not to drop down too far! You lose by either coming into contact with the spikes at the top or falling to the bottom without any platforms
How we built it
We used Python and used assets from royalty free sites.
Challenges we ran into
We worked on this project in a team of 2, and we live in different time zones. In order to meet the deadline of the project, we had to stay up till the wee hours of the morning to develop the game. Secondly, as we were working at different times, as one of us continued working on the project, we didn't have the opportunity to consult the other on specifications that were not clearly defined. Thus, we had to meet a second time to make sure the final product was in line with what we had in mind.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to come up with an idea and implement a pre-alpha of the game within a weekend.
What we learned
We learnt the importance of clearly stating specifications in a project. In the case of Down The Stairs, despite it being only 2 of us developing the app, we needed to make sure that the perceived final product both of us had in mind are the same. Especially working in bigger teams in the future, there could potentially be more room for misinterpretation if specifications are not clear.
What's next for Down The Stairs
Adding advanced obstacles and powerups to add difficulty and variation to the game.
