Inspiration

As someone with relatives who are susceptible to these types of scams, it's important to me that there are safety nets to better support people at risk of exploitation. I appreciate a cognitive approach to things and applications of AI relating to social interaction, so a project such as this follows my passions in tech.

What it does

DoubleCheck is an early intervention for at-risk log-in attempts. Instead of receiving a code that can easily be repeated over the phone, authentication is an in-app process where the user must first end any phone calls to proceed. The user is offered a brief, optional check-in with an AI-powered chat-bot to screen for fraud. If all seems well, authentication is then provided utilizing location-based options -- BlueTooth, GPS, or IP Address comparison before the log-in is permitted.

How we built it

Built in conjunction with Claude Code. Utilizes Typescript + React + Vite for the web app, Swift for the iOS integration. Deployed online with Render.

Challenges we ran into

The initial prototype felt a little clunky and limited -- the slow survey process would provide too much friction for members attempting a valid log-in, so I needed to brainstorm a new approach. Additionally, I didn't have any prior experience with creating apps for iOS, so the set-up was very new.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully utilizing BlueTooth with a code that changes every 3 seconds to verify a log-in via an iOS app was very cool!

What we learned

I think I learned the most about how to optimize to meet a company's business needs -- reflecting on DoubleCheck, I think it's a cool recommendation but I feel I could've gone a little farther and been more ambitious with my idea. I also feel my first implementation wasn't quite as attuned to Sound Credit Union's needs as my final result, and even then I see room for improvement. It has been very cool seeing what others have developed in this process and getting a feel for all the different approaches to this issue -- I think going forward, I'd like to be more daring with my hackathon ideas! All in all, I am proud of what I've learned -- this is my 2nd ever hackathon and my first attempt solo. I've had lots of fun and would love to partake in many more.
