Inspiration
We wanted to create a simple yet addicting game that can entertain people over time. We came into Teen Hackathon fully knowing that we are not the most capable Swift programmers, but we were determined to learn and develop the skills necessary to create something everyone can enjoy.
How it works
Double Dash is currently only available for iPhone users, but will be implemented to Android soon! The game is easy to understand, collect the fuel cans that correspond with each cars' color. Tap the left side of the screen to change lanes on the yellow car, and tap the right side of the screen to change lanes on the red car. Be aware that each car is limited only to it's starting lane and the shared, middle lane.
Challenges I ran into
We found it difficult to create valid collision methods because we initially were unable to understand what the variables represented. With the help of MakeSchool representatives, we learned to debug everything by printing out each and every value of the variables we were using. This made it much easier to see and understand what was going on in the code.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Before last month, neither of us knew any Swift. To be able to watch videos online (courtesy of Udemy), read posts online, and check out available source codes/examples and get this far is amazing. We could not be more proud of what we have created in such a short amount of time given basically no prior knowledge to the language.
What I learned
We learned to effectively use Swift as a language in order to create an iOS game that can be used on any iPhone device. We also learned to use a variety of tools in Gimp in order to create aesthetically pleasing images for our game.
What's next for Double Dash
There is still so much that we can do to improve Double Dash. This is only the start. We can begin by integrating levels, cleaner images/menus, and themes (re - skinning). We had planned to add a soundtrack to the game, but we simply did not have the time to do so. Once Double Dash reaches a greater significant level of development, we plan on marketing the app on the iTunes app store and through social media.
