Inspiration

Dorm life shouldn't feel lonely — but it does. You're surrounded by hundreds of potential friends and have no idea how to meet them. We wanted to give people a reason to knock.

What it does

DormQuest sends you a daily dare to complete in another opted-in resident's room. Finish it within 24 hours, earn points, and climb your dorm-specific leaderboard. Everyone on the platform has signed up to play — so every knock is welcome.

How we built it

We built DormQuest with Expo and React Native for the mobile app, and Firebase for real-time leaderboard updates, authentication, and dare assignment logic — including 24-hour expiration and point tracking.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing fun with safety was our biggest challenge. Making sure every interaction is fully opt-in, keeping dares appropriate, and building a reporting system that actually works took more thought than the core features.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Lowkey, the dares are just really fun lol. We spent way too long coming up with them, and we're not even mad about it.

What we learned

Gamification only works when the stakes feel real. The 24-hour window and dorm-specific leaderboard were the two decisions that made everything click.

What's next for DormQuest

Expanding to all UMD residence halls, adding dare categories (social, creative, helpful), and piloting at other Big Ten schools for Fall 2026.
