Inspiration
When I was a Freshman, I walked into my first dorm with little to no idea what my space was going to look like. Using RateMyProfessor as an example, we wanted to create something that gives students more insight into what they're moving into.
What it does
Users can search for their University/Dorm Hall to find photos, information, and reviews on specific rooms and gain valuable insight into the dorm-selection process.
How we built it
Using Node.js and SQL, we created a web platform and integrated an API to incorporate universities and specific dorm buildings.
Challenges we ran into
Incorporating all the features we wanted, along with gathering data and photos for the universities and dorms, was a big challenge we faced.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a user-friendly UI, and the application included all the features that we hoped it would. Adding the information along with the individual dorm/room reviews came out well and was easy to use/read.
What we learned
Different implementations for Node.js features took longer than others, and finding specific APIs is harder than we anticipated.
What's next for DormCheck
Expand to more schools, include more features that students look for, and make it more integrated with the universities so dorm halls are up to date.
