Inspiration

The core challenge for many ADHD individuals is initiating and maintaining engagement with necessary tasks, not a lack of ability. Traditional productivity apps often trigger executive dysfunction or fail to provide the immediate, stimulating feedback the ADHD brain seeks.

The main inspiration for this project was to create an app that we as ADHD individuals would actually use. So many similar takes are either incredibly basic lacking any real depth, or so strict with very little reward that utilizing them is more of a task than actually doing the task. We set out to create a a web application that satisfied the drive to get the next reward, have a place to reflect on our achievements, include a fun low stimulation mini-game concept that rewards our efforts by allow for a depth of customization while still giving us a way to see our efforts pay off in real time.

What it does

A modern, ADHD-friendly productivity web app that gamifies everyday tasks, chores, and long-term goals. Users earn achievements, can engage with task trees that help break down complex tasks, provide accountability when things need to get finished, showcase those milestones, and care for a virtual fish mascot all while building better habits. 2025 OwlHacks

How we built it

Using React to quickly prototype and implement modern UI elements, Tailwind CSS to introduce a modern and accessibility focused UI, FastAPI that provides our backend to add all the user interaction, and PostGreSQL to store and manage user data linked to their profile. We also had an artist creating amazing pixel art that really tied the entire project together.

Challenges we ran into

-Design creep was a real issue causing a constant re evaluation of goals and expectations. -First time Hackathon lessons especially in the design and planning phases. -Learning how to play to team members strengths while rapidly filly knowledge gaps were expertise was lacking. -Creating a website and creating a modern website are two different tasks for sure. -Crash course in backend development and design mentality -Being really tired...

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overcoming major challenges, working as a team, creating a really great project for this being our first hackathon. Created a website that I would be excited to use in its full fleshed out state.

We dreamed big and achieving big

What we learned

feature creep is something to definitely be aware of, that hackathons are a great learning experience, and just pure coding knowledge. Everyone had knowledge gaps that they had to work through.

What's next for Focus Fishy

-A robust backend that brings the entire website together creating the level of functionality we desire. -Database fully set-up and implemented to make sure each user as a unique experience -More task trees that are fleshed out, thought out and specialized for all sorts of tasks.
-Some integration to help tailor each user to what they want to achieve and help overcome certain areas that may difficult for them. Getting away from the one size fits all approach -Social features that let you showcase and heavily customize your profile page to show off.
