Inspiration
My inspiration came from looking at Montgomery and how so many across its communities were isolated and could not find friends, businesses, tutors, etc. I wanted to fix all of that in one simple app that finds all the people that you want to find.
What it does
Doorways is an app that can connect people across the community based on needs. This helps small businesses and potential consumers. Unlike traditional advertising, we bring the consumer to the business. This also helps struggling small businesses. There are also extensive chat features which boost neighborly fraternity and camaraderie, also creating groups based on interest, fostering the growth and development of people's interests at a local scale.
How we built it
First, I created a plan with all the APIs I would be using, which were mainly comprised of Claude for recommendation software and Supabase for user data. Then, I created a backend made mostly of Typescript that allowed us to store user interests, messages, business data, clients, and user profile data. After this, using Typescript and CSS, I created a simple, easy-to-navigate frontend that allowed users to quickly and efficiently find people they wanted to find.
Challenges we ran into
One of the largest challenges we ran into was the integration of Supabase's authentication system into our program, which took an hour to debug and understand before the system was able to work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating an easy-to-navigate frontend and engineering an idea that is truly useful to the communities around us.
What we learned
An idea is the most important part of any project. Something simple and impactful is much better than something niche and useless.
What's next for Doorways
I plan to expand and deploy Doorways so that anyone and any community is able to take advantage of this app. I truly do believe that this is an incredibly beneficial app that aids in building mutual trust, friendship, and connection between neighbors and communities.
