Inspiration

Smart doorbells have made home security more accessible, but receiving notifications is not always enough. Homeowners may receive multiple alerts without understanding which events actually require attention. We were inspired to explore how AI could make doorstep monitoring more intelligent by transforming ordinary security events into contextual, actionable outcomes rather than simply generating more notifications.

What It Does

Doorstep Guardian AI is an AI-powered home safety solution built for the Amazon Ring Developer Hackathon. It aims to help users understand doorstep events, identify potentially important situations, and take appropriate action through a more context-aware security experience. The central idea is simple: move beyond detecting activity to helping homeowners understand its significance.

How We Built It

We designed the project around an AI-driven workflow that turns doorstep events into meaningful information and trackable outcomes. We focused on creating a compelling end-to-end demonstration that showcases how contextual intelligence can improve the home security experience. Our development approach prioritized a clear user experience, a practical problem statement, and a working showcase MVP suitable for a short hackathon demo.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was thinking beyond conventional security alerts and designing a workflow that provides meaningful context without overwhelming users. We also had to balance the ambition of an AI-powered security experience with the limited time and scope of a hackathon MVP, while keeping the demonstration clear, reliable, and easy to understand.

What We Learned

This project taught us that building a useful AI application is not just about integrating AI models. It is about identifying a real user problem, designing the right workflow, and turning AI-generated insights into practical outcomes. We also learned the importance of prioritizing user experience, reliability, and a focused end-to-end demonstration.

What's Next

We envision expanding Doorstep Guardian AI with richer event context, more personalized alerts, improved tracking of security-related outcomes, and deeper integration with smart home ecosystems. Our long-term goal is to make home security more proactive, intelligent, and human-centered.
