Inspiration

As one who dabbles in social media, specifically scrolling through TikTok and Instagram Reels, I've become victim to scrolling hours on end. If there is an algorithm that keeps users scrolling, we wanted to create an algorithm that stopped users from scrolling.

What it does

Our app has a timer feature that allows users to set a limit on specific scrolling apps, such as TikTok, then sends a notification to put you on "cooldown". This will entice the user to either stop scrolling once they realize how much time has passed or send them to some reels that will slowly bring them back to reality.

How we built it

Our app used Google's Gemini in order to create our algorithm that entices users to stop scrolling.

Challenges we ran into

This was all of our members' first time building a mobile app. We struggled to start because we did not have experience with the frameworks and had different OS compatibility issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was our first mobile app!

What we learned

We learned to work with React Native and integration with OpenAI to develop our algorithm. We also improved our collaboration skills in coming over differences in operating systems and conflicting ideas.

What's next for Doom Scroll Crusher

Currently, our app sends the user to a link that helps them cooldown but we would want full integration with the scrolling platform so it will auto refresh into the videos that utilize our algorithm and will entice you to stop.
