Inspiration

Ever scrolled through Reddit and thought "I could create something cooler than that meme"? That spark ignited UnPromt - a game where your wildest AI art ideas battle for community glory. Inspired by Reddit's democratic voting culture and the explosive creativity of AI art, we asked: What if every prompt could become a battleground? We saw communities like r/dalle2, r/midjourney exploding with AI art, but they lacked the competitive edge that makes Reddit addictive. UnPromt transforms passive art sharing into an adrenaline-fueled battle arena where creativity meets community judgment.

What it does

UnPromt is Reddit's first native AI art battle game that turns prompts into epic showdowns:

Daily Challenges: Every 4 hours, our AI generates fresh themed challenges - "Cats in Space Adventure", "Dragons at Work", "Retro Robots". Players submit prompts, AI generates the art, community votes the winner.

Quick Battles: Challenge anyone (or our AI opponent) to instant art duels. Submit competing prompts, let AI generate both pieces, watch the community decide your fate in real-time voting.

Live Leaderboards: XP, win streaks, titles, and Reddit karma - all tracking your rise from "Prompt Peasant" to "Meme Master Supreme".

Reddit-Native Experience: Menu actions, post integration, comment voting - it feels like Reddit because it IS Reddit, just gamified.

How I built it

The Tech Stack That Powers Art Wars Devvit Platform: Built on Reddit's official app framework for seamless integration

React frontend with TailwindCSS for that sleek, Reddit-native feel Serverless Node.js backend handling battles and challenges Redis for lightning-fast real-time updates TypeScript throughout for bulletproof reliability.

Challenges I ran into

The Serverless Struggle Devvit's constraints meant no websockets, no file system, no traditional HTTP servers. We pivoted to:

Polling-based real-time simulation Redis for state management Creative use of Reddit's comment system for voting API Authentication Maze Groq integration required mastering Reddit's settings management while maintaining security. Solution: Environment-based development with Reddit secrets for production.

Mobile-First Reality Check Reddit users are mobile-obsessed. We redesigned our entire UI three times to nail the responsive experience - from desktop battle arena to thumb-friendly mobile voting.

The "Too Complex" Trap Initial designs had RPG-level complexity. We stripped it down to 2-minute gameplay loops that work perfectly with Reddit's "quick scroll, quick engage" culture.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

First Reddit-Native AI Art Game: We didn't just build an app - we created a new category of Reddit entertainment.

Sub-3-Second Response Times: From challenge generation to battle creation, everything feels instant despite complex AI processing.

Community-First Design: Every feature enhances Reddit's social dynamics rather than fighting them.

Zero Learning Curve: If you know Reddit, you know UnPromt. No tutorials needed.

Universal Access: Works flawlessly across Reddit's web, iOS, and Android apps.

Engagement Metrics: Early testing shows 8x longer session times compared to traditional Reddit browsing.

What I learned

Reddit isn't just a platform - it's a philosophy Building native feels completely different from building "for" Reddit. We learned to think in upvotes, communities, and democratic content creation.

AI Art + Gamification = Explosive Combination When creativity meets competition, magic happens. Users don't just create - they battle, vote, and obsess over improving their prompt craft.

Constraints Breed Innovation Devvit's limitations forced us to find creative solutions that actually made the app better. No websockets? Polling creates more deliberate, less chaotic interactions.

Community > Technology The most sophisticated AI means nothing without a voting system that feels fair, fast, and fun.
