🧙 Inspiration
Doodle Hunter Magic takes the intuitive spell-casting mechanics of Hogwarts Legacy and brings them into a fast-paced, arcade survival setting. I wanted to create a game where the player's speed and accuracy with a "wand" (mouse/touch) are the only things standing between survival and defeat.
🕹️ What It Does
In this game, every enemy is protected by a mystical ward represented by a unique symbol.
- Draw to Destroy: Players must quickly draw the matching symbol to eliminate the foe.
- Escalating Difficulty: As you progress, enemies spawn faster and carry more complex, multi-stroke symbols.
- Combo System: Maintaining a steady rhythm and flawless accuracy builds your combo meter, multiplying your score.
🛠️ How I Built It
- Engine: GameMaker (GML).
- Assets: Leveraged and adapted assets from previous projects to focus entirely on perfecting the new drawing-recognition mechanic.
- Logic: Implemented a custom gesture-recognition system within GML to handle real-time player input.
🚀 Challenges & Accomplishments
Learning a new language is never easy. GML (GameMaker Language) was entirely new to me at the start of this project. By diving deep into documentation and utilizing AI as a pair-programmer, I was able to:
- Transition from zero GameMaker knowledge to a fully functional prototype in just 2 weeks.
- Successfully bridge the gap between abstract mouse gestures and in-game combat triggers.
🧠 What I Learned
This project was a masterclass in rapid prototyping. I learned how to leverage AI to troubleshoot engine-specific syntax and how to prioritize core "game feel" over minor polish during a short development sprint.
🗺️ What's Next for Doodle Hunter Magic
The current version is just the beginning. Future updates will include:
- Story Mode: A narrative campaign following the Hunter's journey.
- Enhanced Visuals: High-impact particle effects and "spell-hit" juice to make every successful draw feel powerful.
- New Game Modes: Time trials and endless "Zen" modes.
