Description
You've been caught! Your big sister came back home early and found you stealing clothes from her closet. She's furious! You need to get outta there, and you gotta be quick! The only safe place is behind your mom. But be careful, the room is messy! Play as the younger sister trying to escape by dodging objets on the floor and hanging from the wall. Good luck!
Inspiration
The inspiration came to me when my internet stopped working and I was hit with Google Chrome's Dinosaur Run game. I used the same game concept but changed the story to fit a funny moment in my own life. I have a younger sibling and often times we get into arguments and we end up chasing each other all over the house, so I thought it would be cute to recreate that as it's own video game. I hope some of the judges find it relatable too! :-)
What it does
The 2D game follows your character (the younger sister) as she is trying to run away from her sister as she chases her around the room. There are incoming obstacles that the player must dodge like books and picture frames. If the player hits an obstacle, it's game over. Use the space bar to jump over them.
How we built it
I built it using Python and Pygame. I had a bit of Python coding experience prior to this hackathon but I had never used Pygame before. For my assets, I downloaded the the obstacle pictures from itch.io (free game assets) and edited them on Canva. For the sister player avatars, I created both of them on a 8-bit Character Generator website and resized them on Canva. I created the wooden floor graphic from scratch using Piskel.com
Challenges we ran into
I ran into a lot of challenges when installing and setting up Pygame onto my Mac device. It took me a while to successfully download Pygame as I kept receiving errors. I also received a lot of errors as I was coding like FileNotFound, NullException, etc. After lots of Stack Overflow, I finally resolved my errors and was able to finish my project on time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am super proud that I was able to create this game all by myself! I didn't have much game dev experience and had never used Pygame before but was able to create a functioning game with not-so-bad graphics! I also learned a lot in terms of asset creation and editing thanks to all the wonderful mentors and other hackathon attendees.
What we learned
I learned how to create a game on Pygame and all of Pygame's built in libraries and functionalities. I learned how to look for assets online and how to create my own. I expanded my knowledge of Python in terms of how to logically code a game.
What's next for Don't Touch My Stuff!
If I had more time, I would add animations to my sprites to make the player run with her older sister behind her. I would create a starting screen with instructions, add more varied obstacles, implement a drop functionality (with the down arrow key), and I would add an ending to the game where the younger sister eventually reaches her mother and is now safe from her sister's fury!
