Inspiration

The current situation for women, even in major cities is deplorable, they have no feeling of safety and an apathetic community stands on the precipice of anarchy.

How it works

Don't Panic is a IoT based mechanism that will be used to communicate with the police, pre-selected contacts and other people in the nearby area who have the app installed on their phone and alerts them to a person in danger. The person in danger, long presses the volume button on her phone and a distress beacon is received by the above mentioned parties. This fosters a sense of community amongst the people who will be using the app, and ensures faster response times from the police as well.

Challenges that my team ran into

  1. Integration of pre-built IoT containers from Bluemix into Android Application
  2. Running the Android Application as a non terminating service.
  3. Failed attempts at using different hard keys on the phone for the distress beacon activation

Accomplishments that my team is proud of

  1. Partial integration of the IoT container/Api into the Android Application
  2. Learning the flowthings filter language for performing partial queries.
  3. Advanced Concepts on the IOBinds for the Android Non-terminating services.
  4. Easy to Comprehend documentation for further advancement with bluemix and Android non-terminating services
  5. Using no specialized hardware to extend a fairly simple solution as a platform for community building.

What I learned

  1. Introduced to higher elements of Android Programming

What's next for Don't Panic

1.Scaling with co-ordination from the police. 2.Massive Awareness Drives to get more people to install the application.
