Inspiration
We were inspired by the "Into The Skies" theme of the hackathon, as well as a flash game called "learn to fly"
What it does
It's a flight simulator controlled by a custom hardware controller.
How we built it
We built it using a custom controller built with VEX IQ parts for the frame and an Arduino board with an accelerometer and joystick as the electronics. We used a NodeJS server to hook up the Arduino to the simulator which was built using GameMaker.
Challenges we ran into
The controls were very jittery for most of development and it was hard to connect up the hardware and software. We also had to learn how to use arduino for the first time, and have it talk to the game using the server.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a smooth camera, with responsive motion and a very responsive controller
What we learned
We learned how to use Arduino and build hardware.
What's next for Don't Crash
We are planning to make it so that we also have altitude in the map, such as mountains being higher than oceans, and multiple more maps as well based on other planets
