Inspiration
We were quite inspired by the many desktop and VSCode pets out there, especially Desktop Goose. But since most of our time is spent on the internet, why not create one for the browser?
What it does
A cute little face that chats with you during your adventures on the internet (only on Google Chrome though). Upon clicking the Go Away button when Gallen tries to be helpful, he jumps around and waits for you to catch him. What a playful fella! After successfully clicking on his beautiful face thrice, he finally stops by and has a chat with you, and is very helpful.
How we built it
We utilised Javascript coupled with CSS and Bootstrap as it is mostly a front-end application. Then fought a war with the manifest.json file that Chrome needs to run it as an extension.
Challenges we ran into
- 3/3 of us never built a web extension before.
- 2/3 of us never touched JavaScript before.
- 1 in 3 never touched HTML before.
- 1 in 3 learnt CSS 1 day ago.
- Building a chrome extension meant that we could not manipulate HTML directly, and had to figure out how to inject code into the existing webpage. Largely different from the web development we knew.
- Centering the div for the chatbox.
- Teleportation of said face
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- The chat box works!
- The face teleports!
- 3 in 3 of us learnt how to make a basic Chrome extension.
- Gallen destroys some elements on the website you're on :)
What we learned
JavaScript and CSS.
What's next for Don't Ask Gallen
- Gallen rotates around and has more states (faces)
