DollarLearn

DollarLearn is a platform designed to improve financial literacy for first generation international students in the US. Through a variety of quizzes, articles, and personalized recommendations, DollarLearn empowers students to make informed decisions about banking, credit, and taxes in the US.

Inspiration

Navigating a new financial system can be daunting, especially for international students who are unfamiliar with US-specific banking, credit, and tax systems. We wanted to create a platform that not only provides educational resources but also makes financial literacy engaging and accessible for first generation international students.

What it does

DollarLearn offers:

  • Articles on key topics such as the US banking system, building credit, and filing taxes
  • Advisors who can provide personalized guidance and answer specific financial questions
  • Onboarding quizzes to assess users' current financial literacy and tailor content recommendations

How we built it

We used basic HTML, CSS & JS for the project because of the time limit. But we plan on doing the following

  • Frontend: React.js for a responsive and interactive UI
  • Backend: Node.js with Express for API development
  • Database: MongoDB to store user data, quiz scores, and articles
  • Authentication: Implemented using JWT for secure user login and session management
  • Deployment: Hosted on Vercel

Challenges we ran into

  • Content Personalization: Creating a system that can dynamically recommend the most relevant articles and quizzes based on the user’s current knowledge level proved challenging.
  • International Considerations: Understanding the unique financial challenges that international students face, and ensuring that our content reflected accurate and helpful information.
  • Responsive Design: Making sure the platform works seamlessly across all devices, from desktop to mobile.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully built a platform that addresses the financial education gap for first generation international students.
  • Implemented a dynamic quiz system that adjusts based on user knowledge.
  • Developed a clean and intuitive user interface that provides a seamless learning experience.

What we learned

  • User Experience Matters: Understanding our users' needs and tailoring content for first generation international students taught us the importance of simplicity and clarity in financial education.
  • Collaboration: Working as a team, we learned how to effectively communicate and divide tasks to deliver a polished product.
  • Financial Systems: We deepened our own knowledge of US banking, credit, and tax systems while creating the content for DollarLearn.

What's next for DollarLearn

  • Mobile App: We plan to develop a React Native app to make the platform even more accessible to users on the go.
  • More Articles & Quizzes: We aim to expand our content library with more advanced topics and regional-specific advice for students from different countries.
  • Community Forum: Introduce a forum where users can ask questions, share experiences, and get advice from their peers.
  • Gamification: Adding badges and leaderboards to encourage continued learning and engagement with the platform.
  • AI/ML Integration: Leveraging machine learning algorithms to personalize the learning experience even further by recommending articles, quizzes, and financial tips based on the user's behavior, progress, and preferences. AI can also help identify gaps in knowledge and suggest tailored learning paths to improve financial literacy efficiently.
  • Chatbot Advisor: Developing an AI-driven financial advisor chatbot to provide real-time answers to common financial questions, ensuring users have instant access to the information
