Inspiration
Children are not taught financial literacy, much less how to manage budgeting and track their spending. We created this web app to encourage children ages 8-12 to learn how to manage money.
What it does
Dollar Sim is a virtual bank account that creates a mock environment where children can earn and spend money. It leverages full parental control without being stifling to children's choice and preventing learning. Through interactive features such as job postings and an online store, children get hands-on experience with tracking money.
How we built it
Our app introduces a chore and job tracking system, encouraging kids to earn and manage money responsibly. A friendly GUI displays pending chores, completed tasks, and corresponding earnings, turning financial responsibility into a tangible and rewarding experience. Our tech stack is React js for frontend, Node.js, Express.js, python, and flask for backend, and MongoDB for our database tracking inputs that consist of jobs, items, and purchases.
Challenges we ran into
We were interested in using Firebase to aid our user authentication, but due to time constraints we were unable to implement it.
What we learned
We learned a variety of new skills: from emulators to web design.
What's next for Dollar Sim
Our goal is to implement a fake phishing component to the interactive design. By creating pop ups that would offer benefits or cash but detect that amount if the child clicked a link or button, we could teach teach children the dangers of fraudulent behavior, and to encourage them to be aware of where they choose to put their money.
