👀Inspiration
During COVID, shelters across the world have seen an increasing demand in dog adoptions. Some shelters have even been left with a shortage of dogs. Since everyone has been staying home, there has been a 30-40% increase in the purchase of dogs since 2019. Many of these new dog owners are inexperienced with the responsibilities and the new way things must go when a dog is taken into a family. They are not aware of all the needs of a dog, both on a daily basis and for long-term care. Along with that, there is yet to be a centralized way to keep track of all the needs a dog may have. We wanted to create an app that both new and experienced dog owners could use to make sure that they have a place they can easily rely on to provide accurate information about what they need to do for their dog and when they need to do it. Hence, we created Dogify.
🧠What it does
When the user first opens Dogify, they are prompted to a welcome page where they can sign up or sign in. Upon logging in, they are presented with 3 cards. The food card prompts the user the number of grams needed to sufficiently feed their dog, based on information such as their dog’s breed, age, and food type. The walking adventures card displays the amount of time before the user needs to take their dog on a walk and some necessities that the user must bring. In addition, if the temperature of the user’s location is high, the app will remind the user to bring extra water. The chatbot feature uses a decision tree algorithm to answer common questions that users may have about their furry friend. The daily schedule tab provides the user with their dog’s daily schedule and notifies the user 30 minutes before each event. The necessities tab is an editable and toggleable checklist of the dog’s necessities. When the user runs out of an item, they can toggle the switch on and will be reminded to purchase it the next time the app detects that they are at a store. Finally, the calendar tab gives the user a long-run picture of any upcoming appointments or events for their dog.
All in all, by giving users a centralized platform where they can find information and ask questions about their dog, this app will help owners take care of their pets in the midst of their busy lifestyles.
👩🏽💻How we built it
We built our app prototype/wireframe/mockup with Figma and our pitch deck was made in google slides.
😬Challenges we ran into
One challenge that we ran into was trying to decide the color scheme. Originally, we wanted to use a salmon-orange color as the main color of our app, but we soon found that color hard to work with, and instead switched to our current pink look. In addition, we both had to study for our upcoming finals while working on this project and it was difficult to coordinate availability for working on the project as well as editing our final pitch video.
🙌Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of how we were able to create a well-thought-out idea and design such a comprehensive wireframe of the app in such a short amount of time. In addition, we really love how the design of the app turned out.
🤩What we learned
We learned a lot about using Figma and how to create a pitch deck for our app. In addition, we learned a lot about the problems that dog owners often face when brainstorming the features for our app. We hope to continue to contribute solutions to problems that people in our world today face!
🤫What's next for Dogify
We hope to fully implement our current prototype with code in the future. In addition, we would love to add more features to our app, such as a feature that can provide the user with the safest walk-routes based on their current location and how long they would like to walk for. We would also love to create a community feature, where users can chat with other dog-owners nearby. There are so many possibilities for Dogify!
