🎃 Dog Angelenos - Kiroween Hackathon Story

Inspiration

The inspiration for Dog Angelenos came from observing the disconnect between the premium dog training services in Los Angeles and their outdated, clunky websites. LA is a city known for luxury, innovation, and high standards—yet most dog training businesses still rely on basic WordPress templates or Facebook pages to manage their operations.

I wanted to create something that matched the sophistication of the service itself. But more importantly, I wanted to prove that with Kiro's AI-powered development, a single developer could build in hours what traditionally takes a team weeks.

The "Costume Contest" category was perfect—I could create a "haunting" dark mode UI that transforms the mundane business of dog training into an elegant, Apple-inspired experience. The dark theme isn't just aesthetic; it represents the mysterious, magical transformation that happens when you train a dog—turning chaos into harmony.

How I built it

This is where Kiro truly shines. I built the entire application through conversational development:

1. Vibe Coding - Natural Language Development

Instead of writing code manually, I described what I wanted in plain English:

Example 1: Building the Trainers System

Me: "add trainers page, api in backend and polished elite page in ui"

Kiro generated:
- Complete REST API with 6 endpoints (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, seed)
- SQLAlchemy database model with proper relationships
- Frontend page with API integration and loading states
- Admin CRUD interface with modals
- Dark mode support throughout
- Comprehensive documentation

Time: 30 minutes (vs 4+ hours manually)

Example 2: UI Polish

Me: "polished elite page in ui"

Kiro enhanced:
- Larger typography (text-7xl for hero)
- Gradient backgrounds with overlays
- Enhanced shadows with color glows
- Smooth animations with scale effects
- "Why Choose Us" section with stats
- Premium CTA sections

Time: 15 minutes (vs 2+ hours manually)

Example 3: Micro-adjustments

Me: "make header height smaller"
Kiro: Reduced logo from 96px to 64px, adjusted padding

Me: "move about to last in header"
Kiro: Reordered navigation links

Me: "add in header to access it"
Kiro: Added trainers link to navigation

2. Steering Docs - Guiding Intelligence

I created two steering documents that Kiro used to maintain consistency:

project-context.md:

  • Tech stack (Next.js, FastAPI, SQLite)
  • Architecture patterns
  • Design system (colors, typography, spacing)
  • Los Angeles market focus

coding-standards.md:

  • Component structure guidelines
  • Dark mode requirements (dark: prefix on all colors)
  • API conventions
  • Accessibility standards

Impact: Kiro automatically applied dark mode classes, used consistent gradients, and followed established patterns without me specifying it every time.

3. Iterative Refinement

Rather than trying to specify everything upfront, I built features iteratively:

Iteration 1: "add trainers page" → Basic page
Iteration 2: "connect to API" → Data fetching
Iteration 3: "polish the UI" → Gradients and animations
Iteration 4: "ensure dark mode works" → Theme integration
Iteration 5: "add to admin panel" → CRUD interface

Each iteration built upon the previous work seamlessly.

4. Tech Stack

Frontend:

  • Next.js 14 (App Router)
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Framer Motion
  • React Context API

Backend:

  • Python FastAPI
  • SQLAlchemy ORM
  • SQLite (PostgreSQL-ready)
  • WebSockets for real-time chat
  • Pydantic for validation

Deployment:

  • AWS EC2
  • Nginx reverse proxy
  • PM2 process management
  • SSL with Let's Encrypt

Challenges I ran into

1. TypeScript Type Conflicts

When adding new trainer modals, there were conflicts with existing function names.

Solution: Kiro identified the issue, created a separate TrainerModals.tsx file, and updated all imports automatically.

2. Dark Mode Consistency

Ensuring every component supported dark mode could have been tedious.

Solution: Steering docs told Kiro to always include dark: variants. Every new component automatically had dark mode support.

3. API Integration Complexity

Connecting frontend to backend with proper error handling, loading states, and TypeScript types.

Solution: Kiro generated complete integration code including:

  • Fetch calls with try-catch
  • Loading state management
  • Error handling
  • TypeScript interfaces
  • Optimistic updates

4. Real-time Features

Implementing WebSocket chat seemed daunting.

Solution: Kiro built the entire WebSocket system through conversation, including:

  • Backend WebSocket handler
  • Frontend connection management
  • Message persistence
  • Unread count tracking
  • Connection status indicators

5. Deployment to Shared EC2

The instance already hosted MentorMap AI with Nginx.

Solution: Created Nginx configuration for subdomain routing, ensuring no port conflicts and proper SSL setup.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

1. Development Speed

Built in 6 hours what would take 40+ hours manually - a 7x speedup!

2. Code Quality

  • 100% TypeScript coverage
  • Comprehensive error handling
  • Loading states on all async operations
  • Dark mode on every component
  • Responsive design throughout
  • Professional documentation

3. The "Costume" (UI)

Created a truly haunting, unforgettable UI:

  • Complete dark mode that transforms the app
  • Mesmerizing gradients throughout
  • Smooth, ghost-like animations
  • Apple-level polish and attention to detail
  • Premium feel that elevates the industry

What I learned

1. Conversational Development is Real

Building software through natural language isn't just possible—it's better. I could focus on what I wanted to build rather than how to implement it.

2. Steering Docs are Powerful

Setting context once and having it applied automatically saved enormous time. Dark mode, gradients, and Los Angeles focus were maintained without constant reminders.

3. Iteration Beats Specification

Rather than trying to specify everything upfront, building incrementally and refining through conversation led to better results.

4. Context Awareness is Magic

Kiro understood my codebase patterns and applied them automatically. New components matched existing structure without explicit instructions.

5. AI Amplifies, Not Replaces

Kiro didn't replace my creativity or decision-making—it amplified my ability to execute. I focused on vision and user experience while Kiro handled implementation details.

6. Quality at Speed

Fast development doesn't mean low quality. With Kiro, I got both speed AND quality—proper TypeScript, error handling, accessibility, and documentation.

7. Dark Mode is an Experience

Creating a complete dark theme isn't just about colors—it's about creating an atmosphere. The "haunting" UI transforms the entire application into something memorable.

Final Thoughts

Building Dog Angelenos with Kiro has been transformative. It's not just about speed—it's about the joy of creation. When you can describe what you want and see it come to life in minutes, development becomes a conversation, an exploration, a partnership.

The "costume" we created—the haunting dark mode UI—isn't just pretty. It's a statement: software development has evolved. We're no longer limited by our typing speed or our memory of syntax. We're limited only by our imagination.

And that's truly magical. 🎃👻
