Inspiration

Erik was playing Pokemon Go and saw a new feature allowing AI to recognize Pokedex icons. Aaron thought that maybe they could implement a form of AI into their own project. A light bulb lit up in Erik's mind and he thought, "What if we implement some sort of image processing API that identifies an image of a plant or animal and gives a description of the animal or plant." Aaron built off of this idea and thought maybe they could set parameters within the AI for identifying whether the plant or animal is endangered or not. Using the picture it also takes the location of the picture and sets a marker on Google Maps so that a researcher can identify the location of the endangered species and the researcher can use it for their research and help prevent extinction.

What it does

Our app allows users to take or upload a photo of an animal or plant, identify if it's an endangered species using AI, and automatically tag the location of the sighting. This information is then made available to researchers, enabling real-time monitoring and contributing to conservation efforts.

How we built it

We used Android Studio and the Kotlin coding language as well as Gemini API for image processing

Challenges we ran into

Many syntax errors, Gemini API integration failures, Internet Issues

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We developed full-ledged app that integrates Gemini API which has never been done before, grew our friendship

What we learned

Do not use Android Studio and instead use Swift UI

What's next for DODO X Extinct

Prevent extinction for all species in the world and bring back the Dodo Bird Collaborate with conservation organizations like World Life Fund Organization For Nature and Wildlife Conservation Society Release the app on the Android Store Fix the User Interface and make it more user friendly
