Bird vs Drones
Inspiration
While learning full-stack development, I was always curious about what I could create on the frontend. 8 years ago I wanted to break away from CRUD apps and challenge myself with something more dynamic and visual. That curiosity led me to start a project called Dodge the Drone — a simple browser game idea where a bird dodges flying drones. Link: https://github.com/saadbinamjad/dodge-the-drone. Old game play: https://dodge-the-drone.firebaseapp.com. But could hardly do the complex game graphics and the logic using frontend technologies back then. Now wanted to do the same but with AI called Bird vs Drones.
What it does
Bird vs Drones is a fullscreen, responsive arcade-style game where players control a bird in third-person view and dodge waves of hostile drones. Drones shoot lasers or bullets, and the game ends in a single hit — one life per session. It features:
- 20 levels of increasing difficulty
- Real-time collision detection
- Score sharing via social platforms
- Screenshot download of game over screen
- A mobile-friendly, intuitive user experience
How we built it
I revisited the original concept using the Bolt platform and a single well-crafted one-shot prompt. With the help of AI, I was able to:
- Auto-generate responsive layouts and logic
- Implement drone behavior, attack patterns, and level progression
- Include local high score tracking and replay functionality
- No manual game engine coding was required — just prompt engineering and iteration
Challenges we ran into
Turning my old game concept into a single, clear AI prompt took multiple refinements. Balancing “addictive gameplay” vs. “punishing difficulty” with only one life was tricky. Making sure everything ran smoothly and responsively across both desktop and mobile devices required design and input mapping consideration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Took a stalled GitHub prototype and turned it into a playable, polished game. Achieved full game logic, animations, and shareable moments via AI with no backend setup. Created something that feels genuinely fun and replayable — and shareable with friends.
What we learned
Traditional frontend tools make interactive games hard — but AI platforms like Bolt radically lower that barrier. A well-structured prompt can serve as both design doc and dev spec when building with generative platforms. Creative ideas don’t need massive engineering investment to become real — just the right tool and framing.
What's next for Bird vs Drones
Add power-ups like temporary shields or slow-mo boosts. Build a leaderboard using anonymous session IDs. Add optional logins to let players track their all-time scores. Consider turning it into a native app or PWA for offline play. Share this game as a way to pitch AI tooling for rapid workable prototypes.
Single Shot Prompt
Build a fully responsive web-based game for mobile and desktop using Bolt. The game is a classic arcade-style vertical scroller called “Bird vs Drones”.
Core Gameplay: • The player controls a bird that can fly up and down by tapping or using arrow keys or swipe gestures. • The goal is to dodge a barrage of incoming drones. • Drones can shoot laser beams or bullets, creating dynamic obstacles. • The game must include hitboxes and collision detection: if the bird gets hit even once, the game ends — only one life per session. • Drones get faster and smarter as levels increase. Introduce new drone types with unpredictable patterns.
Progression: • Game starts at Level 1 and ends at Level 20. • With each level, difficulty increases (faster drones, more shooting, smaller gaps). • No login required. The game starts instantly.
Scoring: • Score increases based on distance survived and levels crossed. • After game over, show the final score with level reached.
Sharing Features: • Include a “Share Score” button to share on WhatsApp, Facebook, X, or copy a link with a thumbnail. • Provide a “Take Screenshot” button to download a snapshot of the final score screen with the bird and level info.
Visual and UX: • Colorful and fun design, addictive sound effects, upbeat background music. • Use animations for bird flaps, drone attacks, and level-up transitions. • On mobile, enable swipe up/down; on web, enable arrow keys.
Replayability: • Encourage retry with quick restart, “Try Again” button. • Keep the game lightweight, no login or registration. • Store high score per session using local browser storage (no DB needed).
Technical: • Fully responsive on all devices and screen sizes. • Use Bolt’s game engine and assets to generate all UI and logic. • Code, assets, and UI should be generated together. • Ensure smooth performance and intuitive controls across platforms.
