Documentation, Please? is a text-based interactive game developed with Amazon Bedrock's Party Rock.

Inspiration

This game is inspired by Papers, Please which draws from the essence of bureaucracy, moral ambiguity, and the weight of decision-making amidst societal upheaval. Through its mechanics and narrative, the game captures the tension between duty and compassion, reflecting the struggles of individuals caught in oppressive systems.

What it does

In this game you will embody different roles of law enforcement, interacting with citizens and making decisions. Players take on the role of a police officer in a sprawling metropolis where tensions run high. As the gatekeeper of the city's borders, players must not only scrutinize passports and documents but also navigate moral dilemmas as they encounter refugees fleeing persecution, smugglers, and individuals with hidden agendas. The game's narrative branches based on the player's choices, delving into themes of identity, discrimination, and the consequences of authority. With each decision shaping the fate of the city and its inhabitants, Documents, Please offers a compelling exploration of power, empathy, and the complexities of human interaction in a world on the brink of upheaval.

How we built it

PartyRock, as a platform, facilitated the development of the application through its robust set of tools and features tailored for generative AI applications. Incorporating prompt engineering into the development process, the application built using PartyRock platform capitalized on carefully crafted prompts to drive narrative and gameplay elements.

Challenges we ran into

First and foremost, adapting the intricate mechanics and narrative depth of Papers, Please into a new game required meticulous planning and design. Balancing the tension between gameplay mechanics and narrative immersion while ensuring player agency and meaningful choices posed a significant challenge. In addition, another major obstacle would have been designing an interface that effectively conveyed the nature of the game while remaining intuitive and user-friendly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Engaged gameplay
  • Successfully captured the essence through gameplay mechanics and narrative depth.
  • Developed an intuitive and immersive interface that balances complexity with user-friendliness, allowing players to engage with the game mechanics effectively.
  • Integrated thematic visuals

What we learned

During this project, we learned the importance of prompt engineering in shaping player experiences and driving narrative depth. Through meticulous crafting and iteration of prompts, we discovered that each interaction serves as a pivotal moment for players, influencing their perceptions, emotions, and decisions within the game world. By structuring prompts effectively, we were able to create meaningful choices, branching narratives, and dynamic gameplay experiences that resonated with players. Additionally, we realized that prompt engineering goes beyond mere dialogue or text prompts; it encompasses the careful orchestration of the whole game flow.

What's next for Document, please?

Moving forward, the project could focus on expanding its content by adding more events and levels to enhance gameplay depth and replayability. This expansion could involve introducing new challenges, characters, and story arcs that further explore the game's core concept.
