Introduction
Waiting at the emergency room can be long. Very long. And sometimes all we have to gage how much time is left is a simple number on a piece of paper and a screen with no information whatsoever. We wanted to change that in order to not only display the important information, but also to do it in a way that's reassuring for the stressed patients and aesthetically pleasing in order to ease some of the tension in such an environment.
What it does
The website allows you to enter your given ID/ticket number, and receive information regarding your position in the queue, the estimated wait time, your triage category, and some information regarding your visit at the emergency room.
How we built it
We used Angular for the development of this project. We also used the provided API for the backend using Flask.
About the team
Among the four members of the team, three of us are beginners (i.e. knowing only Python and basic HTML/CSS) and two of us were in our first hackaton experience. However, we got the chance to meet Abderrahmane, who had experience in hackatons and in development, and who was looking for a team. Needless to say that Abderrahmane was of great help in not only helping us get a product that actually works, but teaching us and helping us throughout the process. Big thanks to him!
Challenges we ran into
Normally, as a team of beginners, it was often overwhelming to see all the different languages, technologies, frameworks and concepts being used in building full-fledge websites with those features and that looks good. It was definetly a lot, however, we all did our best to get some hands on the code, to experiment by ourselves, and to learn from our experienced team member.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
William made a labyrinth game as an idea that could be implemented to the project. He did it all by himself. Yann also worked by himself in doing a whiteboard for drawing that could also be implemented as a minigame. Santiago learned Figma in order to do some mockups for the design and proof of concept. We also all managed to learn a LOT about the basics of webdev. Kudos to all of them!
What we learned
Learned how HTML/CSS/JS all communicate and work together. We also did some Tailwind CSS.
What's next for Doctor Standby - Emergency room reimagined
Since it works on data from different hospitals, it also means it could work for other types of waiting rooms. If we can give useful information to make the experience of waiting just a little bit more pleasant for everybody, that would be great!
