Inspiration

Managing your health can be daunting and tricky. Whether it's keeping track of the medications you take, trying to remember what vaccinations you're due for, or monitoring health issues over time, it often feels like you're left to figure things out for yourself. And the pandemic has made it even harder, with longer gaps between appointments with your doctor meaning a greater potential for miscommunication and forgotten concerns. Our inspiration comes from situations we've experienced first-hand that we believe should be problems of the past.

What it does

Doctor's Note is a mobile app that lets you take your health into your own hands. Users are able to log log any health concerns they may come up with, which allows them to keep track of symptoms they experience and have an easily accessible medical diary always on hand. They can also set up recurring reminders for medication/vitamins or appointments and receive notifications on their device.

How we built it

Doctor's Note began as a merge of our collective ideas after an intense and productive brainstorming session. We then made an outline on Google Docs of what features we were going to incorporate into the app and what function each page should have. From there, we created a simple wireframe on Google Drawings, which was the basis for our prototype on Figma.

The next day was focused entirely on development. We used React Native along with Expo for the front-end of the app, and Firebase for our authentication system.

Challenges we ran into

We faced a few major challenges throughout the hackathon. Our biggest challenge was working the emulator to view our project with Expo. Most of us had technical issues getting it to work and it took up a lot of our time. We also struggled with implementing a functional navigation bar, as well as some other features we had hoped to incorporate. However, we did end up figuring out solutions to work around these challenges. And lastly, being a group of three meant less people to divide the work across, and more responsibilities for each team member. Though it did make completing the project feel that much more rewarding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're all newbie hackers, and for two of us it was our first ever hackathon. We also had very little experience with React Native and Firebase. Our team is really proud of the app we created as it proved to us that we're able to accomplish anything we set our minds to!

What we learned

Our team became more familiar with the technologies, languages and frameworks we used for our project. We also learned a lot about the importance of planning and prioritizing.

What's next for Doctor's Note

  • Implementing a calendar and search to easily access dates (ex. date of last dental appointment or blood test)
  • Using an algorithm to group together logs so they are easily searchable
  • iOS integration and push notifications for reminders
  • More accessibility ...and much more!
