Inspiration

Business documents contain critical information such as deadlines, financial values, obligations, and compliance requirements, but finding and verifying this information manually is time-consuming. We wanted to build a solution that not only understands documents but also shows exactly where each insight came from.

What it does

DocScan AI uses AI to analyze business documents such as contracts, invoices, reports, and compliance documents. It extracts deadlines, obligations, financial values, anomalies, and potentially missing information. Each result is linked to its source page, section, and evidence text, making the insights traceable and verifiable.

How we built it

We built DocScan AI using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, with Firebase for authentication, and backend functions. An AI model processes the extracted document content and returns structured insights with evidence references. The system follows an “Extract → Detect → Prove → Ask” workflow.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenges were maintaining accurate document context, handling different document structures, detecting conflicting information, and preventing AI hallucinations. We addressed these by requiring evidence for every important finding and separating uncertain or missing information from confirmed facts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a working document intelligence workflow that goes beyond simple summarization. Our evidence-traceability feature allows users to verify findings directly against the original document, while the AI assistant provides document-specific, evidence-backed answers.

What we learned

We learned that effective document AI is not just about extracting information—it is about preserving context, validating outputs, and making AI results explainable. Traceability and evidence are essential when AI is used for business decisions.

What's next for DocScan AI

We plan to add OCR for scanned documents, multi-document comparison, automatic deadline reminders, PDF evidence highlighting, advanced anomaly detection, confidence scoring, document history, and collaboration features.
