💡 Inspiration

Law students often work with lengthy case judgments, scattered notes, exhibits, timelines, and study materials across different tools. We wanted to create a focused workspace that brings these parts of legal study together.

That idea became Docket — a platform designed to make complex legal cases easier to organize, understand, and study.

Docket is an AI-powered legal case management and study platform for law students.

🛠️ How we built it

Docket is a full-stack web application built using:

  • Next.js
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Node.js
  • MongoDB

We designed the platform around the workflow of studying a legal case, connecting case information, exhibits, timelines, and study tools within a single workspace.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was organizing different types of legal information without making the interface overwhelming.

Cases can contain structured information, notes, multimedia exhibits, chronological events, and study material. We had to carefully balance functionality with simplicity.

We also worked through challenges involving file handling, database structure, frontend-backend communication, deployment, and connecting multiple features into one coherent workflow.

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that Docket evolved from an idea into a working, deployed product.

Some highlights include:

  • Building a complete full-stack application
  • Creating a dedicated legal case workspace
  • Supporting multiple types of exhibits
  • Connecting case timelines with case information
  • Adding tools for active-recall learning
  • Designing a focused interface for students
  • Deploying the application for real-world use

Most importantly, we built around a genuine problem rather than simply creating a collection of unrelated features.

📚 What we learned

We learned that good software is not just about adding features.

Building Docket taught us how frontend architecture, backend services, databases, file handling, APIs, and deployment come together in a real product.

We also learned the importance of designing around the user's workflow and keeping the experience simple even as functionality grows.

🚀 What's next for Docket

Our goal is to continue developing Docket into a more complete legal learning and knowledge-management platform.

Next, we want to:

  • 🤖 Improve the AI capabilities within the existing workflow
  • 🔗 Strengthen connections between cases, evidence, concepts, and study material
  • 🧠 Help students move from collecting information to understanding and remembering it
  • 📈 Expand the platform while keeping it focused and easy to use

Our long-term vision is to give law students one workspace for their entire case-study workflow.
