Inspiration

Business decisions often depend on information hidden inside invoices, contracts, reports, and compliance documents. Important details such as payment deadlines, financial values, contractual obligations, missing information, and potential anomalies can be difficult to locate and verify when documents are long or information is scattered across multiple sections.

We wanted to explore a simple question: What if business documents could explain what matters instead of making people search for it?

This led us to build DocIntel AI, an intelligent business document analysis concept focused on turning unstructured documents into structured, actionable, and traceable insights.

What it does

DocIntel AI analyzes business documents and identifies information that may require attention, including:

  • Deadlines — payment dates, renewal dates, and time-sensitive commitments
  • Financial Values — amounts and important financial information
  • Obligations — contractual responsibilities and commitments
  • Missing Information — potentially incomplete or missing data
  • Anomalies — potential discrepancies that may require review

A key part of our approach is traceability. Instead of presenting an AI-generated finding without context, DocIntel AI connects important findings back to the original document through page, section, and supporting evidence.

This creates a workflow of:

Document → AI Understanding → Important Finding → Evidence → Action

How we built it

We designed DocIntel AI as a document-intelligence workflow with a dashboard-based user experience.

The proposed workflow is:

  1. The user uploads a business document.
  2. The document is processed while preserving its source context.
  3. An AI analysis layer identifies important business information.
  4. Findings are organized into structured categories.
  5. Potential issues such as missing information or anomalies are surfaced.
  6. Users can inspect the source evidence behind an important finding.

Our prototype focuses on demonstrating the user experience and the core intelligence concept, particularly the Finding Traceability workflow.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was designing an AI workflow that goes beyond simple text extraction.

Extracting text is not enough. A useful system must understand which information matters, organize it clearly, and help the user verify where that information came from.

Another challenge was designing the interface so that AI-generated insights remain understandable and actionable without overwhelming the user.

We addressed this by separating the experience into clear stages: Upload, Analyze, Results, and Traceability.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that document intelligence is not only about extracting information. The value comes from connecting extracted information with context and evidence.

We also learned the importance of distinguishing between an AI-generated interpretation and the original source. This influenced our decision to make evidence traceability a central part of DocIntel AI.

Future scope

Our current concept can be extended into a more complete document intelligence platform with:

  • OCR for scanned documents
  • Multi-document comparison
  • Improved anomaly detection
  • Natural-language document Q&A
  • Cross-document intelligence
  • Automated reminders and follow-up actions
  • Compliance monitoring and workflow integrations

Our long-term vision is to build an intelligence layer between business documents and business decisions.
